Kindergarten

Kindergarten at Birchwood School of Hawken is a cheerful environment where academics are stressed, character development is taught, and learning at each student’s pace is the norm. Children will find out how much fun math can be, the wonders of reading on their own, as well as have time to play outdoors with classmates, speak some Spanish, and make science come alive with hands-on experiments.

School Day and Calendar

Currently, the school day runs from 8:30 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. with the doors opening at 8 a.m. and dismissal at 3:20 p.m.

Birchwood’s calendar is planned each year to correlate closely with that of local school districts and other independent schools. Calendars come out in the spring of the prior year, with final revisions in August of the current year.

Entrance Requirements

  • Children must be 5 years of age by September 30

Program – Including Spanish Enrichment

Beginning with Ohio Standards for Full Day Kindergarten Curriculum, instructional practices will also follow the Birchwood model of allowing children to accelerate according to ability, particularly in reading and mathematics. The program is designed to provide a full range of academic and social learning experiences in group, individual and learning center styles. Students will have Spanish language instruction by way of formal classes and also during the school day as part of the daily routine.
