General Behavior Policy
It is our goal to create a culture of achievement at Birchwood School of Hawken. The school environment should support our academic aspirations and excellence. Consequently, we crafted our policies for behavior to support such an environment.
Adherence to our school regulations and rules pertains to both the letter and the spirit. We believe that a positive attitude is just as important as good behavior. Individual and/or group attitudes can significantly enhance or inhibit the learning environment. Therefore, we reserve the right to discipline any inappropriate attitudes as determined by our teachers and the administration.
Parent Teacher Cooperation
In order to accurately, wisely and thoroughly address student needs it is essential that the school fosters a collaborative relationship with parents. Not only do we conduct routine parent-teacher conferences, but we maintain an open door policy to parents concerning any and all issues pertaining to the growth and development of their child.
Research confirms the vital role that homework plays in a child’s education. We believe a good homework policy will:
- Develop good study habits, including organization and time management
- Increase time-on-task – resulting in greater understanding of content and automaticity in skill work
- Provide for acceleration
- Provide time for remediation
Homework in the primary grades focuses primarily on developing work habits. In the upper grades, homework continues this development and provides for more time-on-task.

School Dress Code
Our dress code reflects our desire to maintain an academic atmosphere and does not reflect personal or administrative opinions about dress or style. Our dress code is intended to minimize personal and social distractions within the school environment.
We allow early entrance according to the guidelines provided by Ohio Public School Law 3321.01. Our criteria for admissions require empirical data, anecdotal data from parents and preschool teachers, and demonstrated physical and emotional maturity. Details for the early admissions process can be obtained from the school office.
Most students are transported to school by their parents. The school can facilitate car pooling options. Some school districts will provide transportation on a public school bus or make payment in lieu of transportation. Currently, school bus transportation is available for Avon, Avon Lake and Westlake residents as well as some City of Cleveland residents. Please contact the school office for details.
