Physical Education
Physical Education at Birchwood School of Hawken is designed to teach competency in motor skills as well as moving concepts, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the performance of physical activities. Responsible personal and social behavior that respects oneself and others within the physical setting are interwoven throughout the program along with encouraging the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction.
Students will learn an understanding of physical movement, the knowledge of strategies and tactics of sports games, and the value of incorporating physical activity into their daily life to improve their health and enhance their quality of life. Starting in kindergarten students take part in a physical fitness challenge that consists of five tests: sit-ups, push-ups, v-sits, shuttle run, and mile run (quarter or half mile for younger children). During the school year students are encouraged and given the opportunity to improve on their times and test scores in and out of class.
Personal goal setting and improvement is what is taught and emphasized. Each quarter students have the opportunity to positively affect their gym grade by recording their physical activity out of the classroom. During the first quarter students record how many 10-minute runs they do in a week, next they record sit-ups, then push-ups, and they end with 10-minute workouts.
