A day at Birchwood School of Hawken is like a day at the United Nations. Our community is one of the most diverse in Northeast Ohio. Seventy percent of Birchwood students are children of first or second generation U.S. citizens from around the world. Birchwood families hail from 36 countries, speaking 19 languages. Birchwood students attend school, study, and become friends with children from Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and South America as well as a diverse group of U.S. children. Their daily experience enables them to connect with a wide range of cultures and religions including Catholicism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Protestantism. As students learn about diversity and multiculturalism, they discover, embrace, and learn to appreciate the common threads in all humanity.
Within the City
Birchwood’s location in the City of Cleveland also affords a close connection to the diverse cultural institutions and organizations within the city including providing preschool students with access to University Circle’s Early Learning Initiative, a series of live performances and programs held at area museums and cultural centers; field trips for seventh and eighth grade students to conduct National History Day project research at the main branch of the Cleveland Public Library; and trips to the courthouse and city hall for elementary-age children.
Offering a Broad Reach
Birchwood also believes that the kind of academic training and preparation offered by the school ought to be available to students from a broad spectrum of social, economic, and racial backgrounds. Offering a superior education provides a pathway of hope, enabling each new generation a richer, fuller, more prosperous future. The school’s location on the west side of Cleveland allows for a reach to a broader spectrum of students.
Birchwood’s location also offers a viable educational option to professional families living in Cleveland. Urbanites who live within the city limits have convenient access to the school campus as Birchwood is dedicated to making a positive impact on the education of youth throughout our city.
“Students embrace their common experiences and diversity as they share friendship both inside and outside of the classroom.”
