Birchwood Power of the Pen Teams Shine at Districts

Seventh and eighth grade teams from Birchwood School of Hawken competed in the first round of the Power of the Pen tournament season, held Jan. 11, at Fairview High School, and walked away with several awards, including three students who placed individually in their respective grades top 12 writers and a top win for the seventh-grade team.

Birchwood wordsmiths were among the 180 writers from 22 schools who embraced the challenge of the Power of the Pen, an intense impromptu writing event. How intense? Students engaged in three back-to-back, 40-minute rounds of writing. That time includes hearing the writing prompt for the first time.

Birchwood writers' winnings included:

8th grade
Individual award: Caleb, 10th place

7th grade
Individual awards: Jenna N., 5th place; Vivian, 2nd place
Team award: First place

All individual winners automatically advance to regionals. Additional team writers advancing to regionals are expected to be announced soon. The regional tournament will be March 8 at St. Charles Borromeo School in Parma.

Congratulations to all of Birchwoods POP writers!
